Chrysanthemum

There are around 40 species of Chrysanthemum, with scented foliage and heads of colourful daisy-like flowers, often in late summer and autumn. Any we offer are cultivated hardy forms suitable for the garden.

As with all 'daisy-like' flowers, the disc-flowers in the centre of the flowerhead produce nectar and pollen that are attractive to insects. The flowerheads of this genus are particularly favoured by hoverflies and butterflies, although in some of the more highly bred varieties, with more pompom-like flowerheads, access to any nectar is sometimes more difficult. Bees will visit the flowers and the presence of natural insecticides (pyrethrums) in the plant may help to rid the bees of some parasites.
