Choice plants for the early spring garden, with very superior buttercup-like flowers, over very ferny foliage. Enjoys a retentive soil in full sun. Found from Europe through to Japan.

Visited by many pollinators including bees, beetles and flies, most are yellow-flowered. However, the one wild species in the UK A. annua is red-flowered, and is a scarce and declining plant of arable margins on light soils. As with many members of the buttercup family, adonis contains chemicals, some of which have been used medicinally.
