This is a monotypic genus, (there is only one species, Pseudolarix amabilis), native to Eastern China, deciduous, with stunning autumn colour. Needle-like leaves in clusters, with cones (resembling artichokes) in autumn, which break up on the tree and carpet the ground underneath, along with the falling orange foliage.
Golden larch is one of only a five deciduous conifer genera across the world, the others being dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), swamp cypress (Taxodium distichum), Larch, (Larix sp.) & the Chinese water pine, (Glyptostrobus pencilis). The first three all grow within a stones throw of each other, in the Water Garden here at Beth Chatto's.
