Chionochloa

Snow grass. 24 species originating from Australasia, with 22 endemic to New Zealand and emblematic of their grasslands. Tussock forming, evergreen, perennial, many providing drama with their form, texture and size. Some with showy inflorescences high above the foliage. An open site perennial, or light, high shade.

As with all tussocky grasses, the tussocks, especially if not cut back too hard in autumn, are of value to overwintering insects, particularly beneficial ones such as ladybirds.
