Abeliophyllum

These shrubs are related to the yellow-flowered forsythia, but have slightly smaller flowers, white to pink, on bare stems before the leaves. Site in a sheltered area, with plenty of light. Grown against a south facing wall would be a good spot. A choice, delicate shrub.

The single species A.distichum, native to Korea, is classed as endangered in the wild, and at high risk of extinction. Cultivation of the wild form especially is therefore a valuable conservation safeguard. Its fragrant flowers in spring attract bumblebees and butterflies that need to feed on their emergence from hibernation.
