A clump-forming perennial with upright narrow, rigid leaves (its relative Phormium cookianum tends to have drooping leaves), dark purple above blue-green beneath, and dull red flowers in summer. Looks superb alongside a stream or pond. Pull off dead leaves when needed to keep the plant tidy.
