This endangered British native (but common through Europe, to Siberia and Japan) spreads by rhizomes and produces a pair of heart-shaped, glossy, veined leaves. Between this arises a spike of delicate white starry flowers, followed by red berries. Ours grow on gentle slope, underneath a Stewartia, on soil with some extra moisture.
