A clump-forming perennial with upright narrow, rigid leaves (its relative Phormium cookianum tends to have drooping leaves), grey-green above blue-green beneath, and dusky red flowers in summer. Looks superb alongside a stream or pond. Pull off dead leaves when needed to keep the plant tidy.
