An east N. American woodland plant for leaf-mould soil and semi-shade. Has divided leaves, oak leaf in shape, slightly mottled above, grey beneath. Just above them hang four-petalled, silky, yellow poppy-like flowers in May. Large green, prickly seed pods, rather like gooseberries, hang hidden beneath the leaves in late summer.
