Get the most from your borders
Of which £100 is a design fee and £200 a deposit towards plants
(Ideal for borders that are 10 square metres or larger)
Over the course of a few years people can spend lots of money on plants for their garden and still not be entirely happy with the results, perhaps the plants have died, or the overall effect is not what was wanted.
This is where Beth Chatto's lifetime of horticultural knowledge and expertise comes in.
Have your own Beth Chatto inspired garden with a bespoke border design created with plants to suit the conditions and space your garden has to offer. Our designs are based on Beth's principles of ecological planting and the right plant for the right place meaning your borders should grow and thrive for years to come.
From start to finish, Jacob Pettersson and his team will work with you to ensure you have a design that you are happy with and borders that will provide you with long-term enjoyment. We can actually save you money in the long run. We do not overfill the borders; we space them appropriately to give the plants the best possible chance to establish themselves and that gives you the chance to watch them grow and learn their habits and how they behave. Jacob has over 12 years experience working in Beth's style here at the gardens. He has over 8 years propagation experience and 4 years experience of managing our retail nursery. Up to the end of 2019, in just under 2 years Jacob has drawn up well over 100 designs.
How does it all work?
1. Purchase the service from our website or in person at our nursery shop and fill in the relevant contact details.
2. We email you our questionnaire for you to complete that contains all the information we need to create your design (sending us photos is a great help too).
3. Once we have that back, we set about designing your border (Jacob will contact you if there is anything he needs clarifying or anything he needs more information on).
4. After receiving the
questionnaire back from you, we will send you:
- A simple, easy-to-follow hand drawn design with all plants numbered and a key.
- An explanation as to how the design was put together, so you can understand what plants were chosen and why.
- A quote containing the plants we can supply, with the plant deposit paid deducted from that and a delivery charge (if delivery is required).
- A Plant Care Plan, so you can see at a glance how your planting comes together with instructions on how to look after and maintain the different plants.
5. If happy, you confirm the order and pay the balance (either through BACS or we can take payment over the phone). We then pick up the plants, reserve them for you and arrange a date for them to either be delivered to your home or collected from our nursery.
And Jacob is always just a phone call or email away if you have any questions or queries about your plants. In mid to late summer, we can also send you a list of dry spring bulbs for autumn planting for you to look through and order if you wish to add extra early spring colour.
Please note: This
is a plant design service based on the conditions and dimensions of your border
and shouldn't be considered a complete garden design service. Of the £300 paid,
the amount paid as a plant deposit will go towards the cost of the plants you
will need for your border; this may or may not be enough as it will very much
depend on the size of your border. We stock predominantly perennial plants
meaning that in some cases, larger trees or shrubs that may be in your design
will not be able to be supplied by us, however, the vast majority are. You will
receive your design after we have received the questionnaire
and any other relevant information back. We can design multiple borders for you
and work around existing plants, but these are to a max of 80m2. If your border
is bigger, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org and
we can quote for this.

Can I order something that you don't sell?
We stock over 2000 varieties of plant and not all of them make it onto our website. If there is a specific variety or plant you are after, please email us on email@example.com
Stock levels are kept fully updated on our website. If you plan to visit our nursery please do check our website for current availability before travelling, or please email us on firstname.lastname@example.org and we can put plants aside for you. Alternatively, order through the website and select the 'Collect from our nursery - FREE' option. Please allow 3 days between ordering & pick up.
What size pots will my plants be supplied in?
Our plants are sold in a range of pot sizes dependent upon their growth needs:
9cm – for all our alpine plants
1 Litre – for the majority of our herbaceous perennials
2 Litre (occasionally 3 Litre) – for shrubs and those herbaceous perennials which require a larger root run
Some plants may be supplied 'bare root' and will be of comparable size to pot grown plants.
Where do you deliver?
We are pleased to be able to deliver our plants throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to deliver overseas.
How much does delivery cost?
Rather than absorb the cost of postage within our plant price we prefer to charge a realistic postage and packing charge.
For orders dispatched to England, Wales and Scottish Lowlands the charge for delivery is:
£9.95 for orders up to £200
£15.00 for orders from £200 to £500
£20.00 for all orders over £500
Please see our Delivery Information page for more details and charges for Scottish Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland, Irish Republic, Isle of man, Isle of Wight and the Channel Isles.
When will I receive my order?
Once you’ve placed your order online you will receive a confirmation email. Your order will then be dealt with as quickly as possible by our experienced mail order team. During peak periods it can take up to 10 working days to receive your plants. Once the team have selected your plants the status of your order will change to “processing”. Finally - when your order has been carefully prepared and boxed and is ready to be collected by our courier - you will receive a dispatch email and can expect your plants to arrive the following day (for England, Wales & Scottish Lowlands). We use a special fragile overnight delivery service to ensure that your plants spend the minimum amount of time in transit. Please see our Delivery Information page for more details and charges for Scottish Highlands & Islands, Northern Ireland, Irish Republic, Isle of man, Isle of Wight and the Channel Isles.
How do I track my delivery?
Once you receive your dispatch email click on the tracking number link and you will be redirected to our couriers APC. Enter your tracking number and postcode there and you will be able to track the progess of your parcel(s).
Why has my plant been cut back?
Traditionally the mail order plant season has run from October to March. This was because many plants would dormant during this time of the year and foliage would either be reduced or absent, making them easier to post.
Now mail order runs all year round and thus requires us to maybe cut back some of your plants, particularly from April to October. Plants with tall flowering stems and lots of foliage may lose a great deal of water in transit and cutting back helps reduce this stress. Cutting back will not harm your plants but will help in their establishment by promoting new root and shoot growth once planted.
*** Coronavirus Information ***
Our people and plants are at the heart of what we do
You may have learned that the Government announced that shops selling non-essential items should close down to help limit the spread of COVID-19, but are encouraging online retail to continue.
Postal services and delivery networks are going to continue running as normal. If this changes, we will let you know.
This means online retail now has an increasingly important role to play.. We want to do everything we can to make sure you receive the items you need - and also protect the health and safety of all parties involved.
Whilst policy might change in the coming weeks, we know for now there may be some small adjustments in sending and receiving your plant orders.
Here's what that means for...
We use a dedicated plant delivery company and are keeping up to date with any changes in their delivery times. Currently we're seeing no significant disruption for UK deliveries.
This means you can shop with confidence, and you'll get most of your items by the estimated delivery date. We'll continue to closely monitor this situation and keep you up to date with any changes.
We'd like to echo the Government's stance and say please do ensure you strictly adhere to the social distancing guidelines when couriers deliver your plants.
If you'd like to take a look at a full copy of the guidelines, you can click:
Click and Collect
We are currently trialling a Click & Collect option which means you can come to the carpark, Tuesday-Thursday 10-4pm to pick up your plants, three days after placing your order. The option to pick up can be selected at the online checkout. The Gardens and Nursery remain closed and there will be no access.
