Osmunda

Majestic, or royal in all aspects. Emerging fronds often covered in hairs, very attractive. Very suitable for water gardens, or a good moisture retentive soil, even in full sun.  Aside from tree ferns, these are some of the biggest ferns which can grow outside in the UK. One native species, Osmunda regalis, mainly in the west, in wet woods, fens etc.

In common with most ferns, Osmunda has rather few specific wildlife attributes, although its fronds form a food plant for a number of moths. In addition its tussock structure provides sheltered niches for insects and other invertebrates, including beneficial predators, although it does die back in the winter.
