Ophiopogon

Similar to the tough evergreens of Liriope, but tending to be smaller and more dainty. Narrow arching foliage, normally green, but with variegated forms and the dark, almost black foliage of Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Kokuryu'. Flowers are bell-shaped, on separate flowering stems, white to pink. Sometimes followed by amazing metallic blue berries.

The often patch-forming nature of the plants provides cover for garden invertebrates and amphibians, while the unobtrusive flowers are visited by flies, and possibly other insects. It is likely the berries will be food for pheasants and the like.
