The Nursery
Adjoining
the Gardens is the nursery providing visitors with the opportunity to
purchase plants that they might have seen growing in the gardens.
There are over 2,000 different types of plants for sale,
predominately herbaceous perennials, bulbs and a selection of shrubs
and climbers to compliment.
There are always helpful, friendly and knowledgeable
staff on hand to help if needed.
The majority of plants for sale
are produced on the nursery and are propagated from plants either in
the gardens or on our stock beds.
It gives us great satisfaction
to point out that we "shop" on the nursery too when we are
planting up an area of the garden, so we know that the plants, given
the right conditions and aftercare will grow away and give many years
satisfaction.
Pot sizes...As a rough guide, our plants are potted in 1/2 litre (9cm) for small herbaceous, 1 litre for general herbaceous and 2/3 litre for larger herbaceous and shrubs.
All plants are grown in Vine weevil protected compost.
The nursery is laid out into various sections. Each section is alphabetically arranged.
Plants for shade.....Here can be found many of the plants growing in the wood garden including a wide selection of ferns and grasses.
Plants for damp.....Many of the plants growing in and around the ponds can be found here, including an interesting selection of marginal plants and a wide range of grasses.
Plants for dry.....This section includes many of the plants seen growing in the gravel garden, giving customers the chance to recreate a drought resistant garden of their own.
Plants for average conditions.....The largest section includes all the classic herbaceous plants from Alchemillea to Veronica, along with many unusual varieties.
Small, low growing plants.....Our "alpine" section contains many of the plants we are growing in the recently created "Scree garden". From Armeria to Zauschneria, passing through Dianthus and Helianthemum, with a wonderful ever-changing selection of Houseleeks!
Climbers and Shrubs.....Here we endeavour to offer an interesting selection of those shrubs and climbers to be seen complimenting the herbaceous plantings in the garden. We always carry a good range of smaller flowered Clematis, a wide range of unusual Lavenders as well as some less well-known shrubs.
Seasonal plants.....We always have an interesting range of half-hardy plants for sale during the summer months that can be seen on display in pots and containers around the garden and nursery.
